FAQ ABOUT ELOPING

Q: CAN WE INVITE GUESTS TO OUR ELOPEMENT?

A: Of course! It's your elopement - you can include your friends & family if you want!

Who you invite is up to you! While I don't normally photograph elopements with more than 10 guests, there is no exact formula for what makes an elopement an elopement! Essentially, there are 3 main guest options:

1. Invite no one - it'll be just the two of you!

2. Invite friends and family (up to 10 people)

3. Invite witnesses and an officiant

If you're not sure if you want to include friends/or family in your elopement or how, you can check out this blog - it has some creative tips for doing just that!

Q: HOW DO WE CHOOSE WHERE TO ELOPE?

A: This is my favourite part about eloping - you can go wherever you want!

Eloping isn't always off in the mountains and it doesn't always involve hiking. Your elopement can look however you want it to look and be wherever you want it to be! I usually suggest considering what activities you want to include in your day and what scenery you want to be surrounded by as the first two guiding questions for where to elope.

I also have so many different locations I can recommend if you're looking for inspiration! Read more about how to choose your adventure elopement location in this blog post on the topic!

Q: WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ELOPEMENT CEREMONY?

A: Really, whatever you want!

Some typical events that take place during an elopement ceremony are:

Reading vows

Ring exchange

A "first" kiss

BUT, you are absolutely able to make it your own - pull out a guitar and sing your lover a song, incorporate hand fasting, or any other cultural or traditional element you want!

Q: IS ELOPING A LEGAL WAY TO GET MARRIED?

A: Absolutely!

If you want to have a legally binding ceremony included on your elopement day, you're going to need a registered officiant and two witnesses.

OFFICIANTS

In Alberta, there is a one-day application for anyone to be certified to legally marry you in a civic (non-religious) wedding ceremony. In other provinces, you will need to find an officiant for your elopement if you plan to make your marriage legal on your adventure!

WITNESSES

Good news? I can act as one of your witnesses for you! On past elopements, couples have even just asked a nearby hiker on the trail to sign as their second witness. You also have the option to bring a friend or family member with you to act as your witness(es)!

Q: WHAT IF WE JUST WANT IT TO BE US ON OUR ELOPEMENT?

A: Your wedding day is the day you choose to say your vows and join your lives together - legalities aside.

If having an officiant or witness around isn't for you, you can absolutely choose to skip that part. Whether you choose to legally marry at the courthouse and then elope and exchange your vows, or simply have a commitment ceremony and skip the legalities of marriage altogether, you get to decide what your wedding day is and what a wedding is to you.

Q: WHAT DO WE DO DURING OUR ELOPEMENT DAY?

A: WHATEVER YOU WANT!

WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE?

WHAT DO YOU SEE, WHAT DO YOU SMELL, WHAT DO YOU DO?

ONE OF MY FAVOURITE PARTS ABOUT ELOPEMENTS is HOW EXPERIENCE FOCUSED THEY ARE! YOU CAN HIKE, CLIMB, CAMP, EXPLORE SOMEWHERE NEW, GO FOR A HELICOPTER RIDE, HAVE A ROMANTIC PICNIC ON THE BEACH AND WATCH THE SUN GO DOwN, WATCH THE SUNRISE FROM A MOUNTAIN TOP, HAVE A CAMPFIRE UNDER THE STARTS, SPEND THE DAY EXPLORING YOUR FAVOURITE CITY OR BREWERY HOPPING...THE OPTIONS ARE ENDLESS!

A COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT ELOPEMENTS IS THAT THEY AREN'T AS SPECIAL AS TRADITIONAL WEDDINGS AND SO THEY NEED TO BE REALLY LOW KEY...THAT'S NOT THE CASE AT ALL! I ENCOURAGE YOU TO TREAT YOUR ELOPEMENT AS A DAY OF CELEBRATION AS YOU COMMIT YOUR LIVES TOGETHER AND CELEBRATE AS YOU SEE FIT!

Q: DO WE HAVE TO HIKE TO ELOPE?

A: NO WAY!

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE AN EXPERIENCED HIKER TO ELOPE OR EVEN INCLUDE HIKING AT ALL.

IF YOU WANT TO EXPLORE THE MOUNTAINS TOGETHER FOR YOUR ELOPEMENT, BUT AREN'T AVID HIKERS, I HAVE SO MANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EASILY ACCESSIBLE BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONS AND ACTIVITIES.

IF YOU WANT TO SKIP HIKING ALTOGETHER THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS YOU CAN DO TOGETHER. MAYBE YOU WANT THE VIEWS WITHOUT THE WORK, A HELICOPTER MAY BE YOUR PERFECT FIT. IF YOU WANT TO RELAX AT A LAKE OR THE BEACH AND HAVE A FANCY PICNIC, WHO'S TO SAY THAT ISN'T AN ELOPEMENT? MAYBE YOU WANT TO GO FOR A ROMANTIC DINNER AT YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL RESTAURANT AND CATCH THE SUNSET FROM A ROOFTOP OR GO ON A BREWERY CRAWL ON YOUR BIKES...LET'S GET CREATIVE AND FIND OUT WHAT FEELS LIKE YOUR IDEAL WEDDING EXPERIENCE!
